Garden Bird Watch 2022 – My Count

I’m sure like many of you I have diligently and happily participated this weekend in the annual garden birdwatch/bird count campaign.

I loaded up my bird feeders, made sure that the cats were asleep inside and had a really lovely hour of bird watching.

I’ve uploaded my results to the appropriate site, which here in France is but I also share my results with you here.

In total I counted 12 species and 24 birds, which interestingly is higher than last year when I recorded only 8 species and 15 birds. I take no monumental conclusions from this variation!

I actually think that the count, if not the number of species, could have been higher this year. We had such fantastic weather here today that I felt compelled to sit outside in my small garden. Although I was very discreet and quiet I’m sure that my presence prevented any big flocks from coming into the garden. In particular the starlings seemed quite nervous whereas pretty much as soon as I left they began to return in much bigger numbers.

Please don’t forget that you can catch up with the feeder camera action pretty much anytime during daylight hours at the link here.

Whether or not you counted birds I hope that you all had great weekends. The weather here today has certainly reminded me that we can soon start to think about the best time of year, Spring is only a few weeks away.

  1. A nice list, James (especially for an afternoon).
We saw just 17 species – not so many given the size of our grounds – and a few expected ones didn’t turn up.
Our list: Woodpigeon 5, Feral Pigeon 2, Collared Dove 1, Rose-ringed Parakeet 8, Green Woodpecker 1, Great Spotted Woodpecker 1, Robin 3, Blackbird 1, Blackcap 1, Blue Tit 8, Great Tit 8, Carrion Crow 2, Jay 1, Magpie 6, Starling 12, Chaffinch 5, Hawfinch 2.
We also saw two Buzzards and a Sparrowhawk overhead, but they didn’t land.
It is interesting to compare the lists: many the same, but a few different ones on each list!
